What is Grammarly?
Grammarly is a program that checks your spelling and helps you to correct your grammar.
How Do You Use Grammarly?
There are a few ways to use Grammarly in your work, how you use it will depend on what you need it for.
Grammarly is even able to check for plagiarism.
The Browser Extension
Install Grammarly right into your browser. They have extensions for Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.
Having this extension will save you time when writing ANYTHING online – including social media posts.
On their site, they have the Grammarly Editor app. You can either write directly within the app or upload a document.
Grammarly can be easily added to Microsoft Office. Run the installer, follow setup instructions, and enable.
Once activated Grammarly will correct your writing within MS Word, so that you don’t have to go to their site every time.
Hugely Important Note: This is on the FREE version and premium version.
Keyboard for iOS or Android
Get the keyboard for both iOS and Android. This keyboard is designed to keep all your mobile typing mistake free.
Grammarly is free? What do you get with it?
The free version helps to correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Here’s a bit more detail on what you get:
- It replaces incorrect words in your writing
- It shows where you need commas
- It will show you when you should use a VS an.
- It knows the difference between your and you’re. And between the words; there, their, and they’re.
- It finds synonyms in whatever you’re writing just by double-clicking the word.
The browser extension, the online app, the Microsoft add-on, and the mobile keyboard is all available on the free version.
Is The Free Version Worth it.
Yes. 100x yes.
Even for the absolute most basic things that you are writing is it worth it? Yes.
I compared Grammarly to the basic spell checker that I had been using for some older posts. I couldn’t believe the amount of red in my posts!
All of the corrections needed were just careless mistakes. I would forget words completely.
Why did I have so many? Because I suck at proofreading. I read too quickly and my brain adds registers the words as what I know that they are supposed to be.
Who Needs Grammarly?
Bloggers & Influencers
Any time you write something online – where everyone can see it – you really should put your best work forward. It also helps avoid the Grammar Nazis!
The browser extension will help you avoid all those mistakes, even in your social media posts.
Get a more professional look in your work life writing. The browser extension will help you write any email with perfect spelling and grammar.
Using the word document add-on, you can ensure that your documents are error-free.
I really wish I had this as a student. I sucked at proofreading in school. It didn’t end up well for me. I was constantly losing marks on grammatical errors.
All it would have taken is 5 extra minutes to plug Grammarly into my word document and go through all those red lines. And this was something I was already doing with Microsoft Word. I corrected every red line that came up. The problem was if I had spelled the wrong word right the chances of it being picked up were slim to none!
I know when I write a lot more careless mistakes seem to slip by, so I couldn’t even imagine the errors when writing a book.
NOTE: Grammarly cannot replace a professional proofreader.
While it might not replace a professional, it can improve your writing by catching typos and other mistakes.
What You Get With Grammarly Premium?
Grammarly Premium comes with everything the free version has (grammar, spelling, and punctuation.) On top of that, it also:
- It helps you maintain your writing style.
- It shows when sentence structure isn’t clear.
- Notifies you of overused words and give alternatives.
- Shows “boring” words and provides replacements.
- Shows when sentences have too many unnecessary words
- Shows impoliteness, insensitive, or non-inclusive language in your writing
- It helps you write in the right tone.
- It checks your work for plagiarism.
You can check your work for plagiarism against tons of other websites. They will let you know if you have partial matches or full matches, and even link that site for you to cite your source.
Is it Worth it?
The free program is worth it for anybody. Even if you’re posting on social media or writing the odd email here and there, it will help you avoid the Grammar Nazis. Or even worse, end up on a grammar compilation video. While they may be funny, I can’t imagine that it would be as funny on the receiving end.
Should you get the premium version? If you’re one the people mentioned above (bloggers, influencers, working professionals, students or writers,) then I believe so yes.
I have the premium version and I love it! With the browser extension, it corrects everything where ever I’m writing. Even as I write this post it’s correcting right in WordPress.
Check out if it’s the right fit for you and sign up for Grammarly for free today. The free version will notify you if there are some premium issues with your writing. It won’t tell you precisely where it’s wrong – like the premium version would – but it will tell you some problems.
